Why this calendar looks confusing every single year
If you get SSI, Social Security, or VA disability, your payment date isn't random — it follows a fixed rule. But when the 1st of the month lands on a weekend or a federal holiday, the payment moves earlier. That's why some months feel like they have two deposits, and others feel like none at all. Nothing is actually missing. The money just arrived early, for next month, because the regular date was a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday.
This page covers the 2027 calendar for all three programs: SSI, Social Security, and VA disability compensation.
The 2027 payment calendar, side by side
When is SSI paid in 2027?
SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is normally paid on the 1st of the month, according to the Social Security Administration's official 2027 payment schedule (Publication No. 05-10031-2027). In 2027:
Benefit month SSI payment date January 2027 Dec 31, 2026 (paid early) February Mon, Feb 1 March Mon, Mar 1 April Thu, Apr 1 May Fri, Apr 30 (paid early) June Tue, Jun 1 July Thu, Jul 1 August Fri, Jul 30 (paid early) September Wed, Sep 1 October Fri, Oct 1 November Mon, Nov 1 December Wed, Dec 1 January 2028 Thu, Dec 30, 2027 (paid early)
When is Social Security paid in 2027?
Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability (SSDI) — paid by birthday, with no shifts at all in 2027 because none of the regular Wednesdays fall on a holiday:
Month Born 1st–10th Born 11th–20th Born 21st–31st January Jan 13 Jan 20 Jan 27 February Feb 10 Feb 17 Feb 24 March Mar 10 Mar 17 Mar 24 April Apr 14 Apr 21 Apr 28 May May 12 May 19 May 26 June Jun 9 Jun 16 Jun 23 July Jul 14 Jul 21 Jul 28 August Aug 11 Aug 18 Aug 25 September Sep 8 Sep 15 Sep 22 October Oct 13 Oct 20 Oct 27 November Nov 10 Nov 17 Nov 24 December Dec 8 Dec 15 Dec 22
There's a separate group paid on the 3rd of the month: people who started getting Social Security before May 1997, and anyone who gets both Social Security and SSI. In 2027 that date shifts four times — Dec 31, 2026 (for January), Apr 2 (April), Jul 2 (July), and Oct 1 (October) — because the 3rd falls on a weekend or holiday those months. Every other month, it's paid exactly on the 3rd.
When is VA disability compensation paid in 2027?
VA disability compensation is paid in arrears, on the first business day of the following month — a long-standing VA administrative practice. No change needed beyond what's already there — keep the existing caveat intact and prominent.:
Benefit month VA payment date January 2027 (no deposit — see below) January benefit Mon, Feb 1 February benefit Mon, Mar 1 March benefit Thu, Apr 1 April benefit Fri, Apr 30 (paid early) May benefit Tue, Jun 1 June benefit Thu, Jul 1 July benefit Fri, Jul 30 (paid early) August benefit Wed, Sep 1 September benefit Fri, Oct 1 October benefit Mon, Nov 1 November benefit Wed, Dec 1 December benefit Thu, Dec 30 (paid early)
The part that causes the most panic: no-deposit and double-deposit months
SSA and VA don't skip a payment. When the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, that month's money is paid early, at the end of the prior month — which then leaves the following calendar month with no deposit at all.
SSI in 2027:
No deposit lands in January, May, or August 2027.
Two deposits land in April, July, and December 2027 (the regular payment plus next month's payment, paid early).
VA disability in 2027:
No deposit lands in January, May, or August 2027.
Two deposits land in April, July, and December 2027.
Social Security (birthday groups) doesn't have this issue in 2027 — no double or skipped months, since none of the Wednesdays collide with a holiday this year.
The birthday-Wednesday rule — and who it does NOT apply to
The second/third/fourth Wednesday schedule only applies to people receiving Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability (SSDI) benefits who started receiving benefits on or after May 1997. It does not apply to:
People who receive SSI only — paid on the 1st, not by birthday.
People who started receiving Social Security before May 1997 — paid on the 3rd.
People who receive both SSI and Social Security — paid on the 3rd.
VA beneficiaries — paid under VA's own arrears rule, not SSA's birthday system.
If you fall into any of those groups and you're checking a Wednesday date, you're checking the wrong column.
What to do if your payment didn't show up
Step one: wait until the end of the day. SSA's own payment schedule instructs beneficiaries to allow three additional mailing days before contacting the agency if a payment doesn't arrive on the expected date — a direct deposit can sometimes post later in the day depending on your bank, and that's normal, not a sign something went wrong.
Step two: if it still hasn't arrived after the waiting window, call. For Social Security or SSI, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213. For VA disability, call the VA benefits hotline at 1-800-827-1000.
Step three: say this on the call. Have your Social Security number or VA file number ready, state the benefit type, the expected payment date from the schedule, and that the deposit hasn't posted as of today. Ask them to confirm the payment was issued and, if so, request a trace.
How to budget around a no-deposit month
Once you know May, August, and (if you get Social Security on the 3rd-of-month schedule) a couple of other specific months pay early rather than not at all, the real task is budgeting around it — not waiting for money that was already sent the month before.
That means treating the early payment at the end of April, July, or December as money that has to stretch to cover the following "skip" month, rather than spending it as a bonus. If a no-deposit month still leaves a gap before your next paycheck or gig earnings land, a small paycheck advance app for gig and hourly workers or early-pay feature — like the ones built into B9 — may help bridge a few days. No app can guarantee exactly when a bank posts a deposit, since that depends on your bank's own early direct deposit policy, but knowing the schedule ahead of time at least removes the guesswork about whether a payment is late or simply hasn't been sent yet.
How much will SSI, Social Security, and VA payments increase in 2027?
SSA announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment on October 14, 2026 (per SSA's official COLA announcement). For SSI, the new amounts start with the December 31, 2026 payment (which counts as January 2027's payment): the federal maximum rises to $1,029 a month for an eligible individual, $1,544 for an eligible couple, and $516 for an essential person, according to SSA's published 2027 SSI federal payment amounts. For Social Security and VA, the increase shows up starting with the January 2027 payment cycle. Actual payment amounts can be lower than these federal maximums depending on countable income, living situation, and state supplements.
Last verified against SSA Publication No. 05-10031-2027 and VA payment trackers: this calendar is reviewed monthly, since holiday and COLA edge cases repeat every year even though the underlying payment rules stay the same.
