What actually separates a cash advance from a payday loan

A payday loan is a loan: you sign for it, a fee is charged up front, and it has a due date attached to your next paycheck. A cash advance app is not lending you new money — it moves forward pay that is already on its way to your account, with no interest, and charges you only if you want it instantly. That is the whole difference, and it shows up in the price.

A payday loan's typical fee is $15 on every $100 borrowed (B9 internal research, September 2026). It is charged whether you keep the money for a day or until payday. There is no discount for paying it back early, because you are not paying interest — you are paying a flat fee for the loan.

How much does a cash advance actually cost?

Our own advance is priced the other way around:

Up to $250 on B9 Basic and up to $1,000 on B9 Premium. Subject to approval — advance limits depend on your direct deposit history and plan.

No credit checks, no interest, no late fees. An instant transfer costs extra; waiting for the standard transfer does not. If you want to see how different cash advance apps built for gig workers stack up, or how the actual math works out between cash advance apps, both comparisons are worth a look before you pick one.

The one question that tells them apart

Ask, before you sign anything: what happens if I'm short on the due date?

A payday lender's answer is a rollover — the loan is extended and a new fee is charged, which is how a small borrowed sum turns into a bigger repaid one. An advance app's answer is that the repayment follows your deposit: it waits, or it retries, and with B9 there is no late fee for it. If a payment has already bounced on you, here are the two calls to make the day a payment bounces.

The option neither of them mentions

Calling the biller and asking to move the due date costs nothing and often buys more days than the advance would. Do that call first. If the gap is real after it, close the gap, not the whole month — and if you're weighing your options, see how B9 compares to other apps built for gig income.
